Cavalcade of Bands 2018

May 11, 2018

Cavalcade: ka-vuhl-kade – any noteworthy series, as of events or activities, or a large gathering.

This year marked the 17th annual Cavalcade of Bands, the final performances for all band students in grades 5-12 for the 2017-18 school year. On Wednesday, May 9th, 160 band students converged upon the Perry-Lecompton gymnasium to perform, demonstrate their growth over the year, and celebrate their achievements.

The night started off with the 5th-grade band. They performed three selections: Colossus, by Larry Clark; High Adventure, by Paul Lavender; and Hocus Pocus, by Rob Foster, Jr. They were followed by the 6th-grade band, who performed Javaleon, by Timothy Johnson; Ancient Moon, by Elliot del Borgo; and Appalachian Folk Dance, by Robert W. Smith. Both groups have made tremendous progress this year and had the opportunity to attend the USD 232 Festival of Bands in April. Our school was one of only a few that were invited to attend and PLMS had the highest participation of any school in attendance.

The 7th and 8th-grade band played next. They performed Nightsong, by Richard Saucedo, and Jungle Dance, by Brian Balmages. The 7th and 8th grade band will be performing both selections at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music on Friday, May 11th.

The High School band finished the concert with an encore of the pieces they performed at the KSHSAA State Large Group contest: Quality Plus March, by Fred Jewell, and Simple Gifts, by Frank Ticheli. The PLHS band received Straight “I” ratings, marking the 9th consecutive year of “I” ratings and the 5th consecutive year of Straight “I” ratings, or “I” ratings from all three judges. The band also took a moment to recognize the seniors that have given so much of their time and energy to this band program: Collin Champagne, Alexis Hickman, Allysa Keane, Joshua LeClair, Cassody O’Connor, Weston Pringle, and Marigold Reumund.

For the second year, awards were given this year for Outstanding Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion students in each band. The 5th grade winners were Lara Mano, Eli Dean, and Bennett Minnick. The 6th-grade winners were Madison Flynn, Zac Essman, and Reece Rossillon. The 7th and 8th-grade winners were Campbell Keller, Riley Ellis, and Katy Hurd. The High School winners were Collin Champagne, Dorothy Haggard, Weston Pringle, Sara Haggard, Joe Ward, and Collin Rossillon.

The band also awarded two students with the Director’s Award for Band and the John Philip Sousa Band Award. The Director’s award, given to an outstanding 8th grader, was awarded to Michael LeClair. The John Philip Sousa Award, given to an outstanding senior, was awarded to Marigold Reumund.

The evening concluded with a traditional performance of “America” by the combined 5th-12th-grade bands. Thank you all for attending and supporting our students’ music education.
