Kelly Haggard Retires
After 31 years in education Kelly Haggard, PLHS Science teacher, is retiring this year. Kelly started his career at Seaman Middle School for 10 years. He then moved to PLHS to teach Biology for the past 21 years.
“We are the sum of our experiences” was a quote Mr. Haggard would use often. Mr. Haggard brought many experiences to the students of PLHS. He applied for and received a grant to build a greenhouse so that our botany kids would have a real-life experience with plants. Each year after filling the greenhouse with a variety of plants he would hold the popular PLHS Plant sale. Kelly also took kids on trips to enhance their knowledge and raise their curiosity about science. He took trips to the Omaha Zoo, Hutchison Salt Mines, and class trips to the creek to study wildlife and plants in a natural setting.
Kelly doesn’t really look at this as retirement but more as a change of jobs. He, with his brother, have an AG services business that will keep him working hard outside of the classroom. He will also spend his time with his wife Calla and following his two daughters as they finish college Sara at Kansas State and Dorothy at The University of Kansas.
Kelly prefers to quietly fade away from PLHS, but he has left a lasting legacy with the students that he has taught over the past 21 years. USD 343 wishes Kelly the best of luck for a long and happy retirement.
