Introducing Mr. Matt Simmons

USD #343 welcomes Mr. Matt Simmons to our district family. Mr. Simmons will teach physical education for kindergarten students at Perry Elementary. In addition to his kindergarten children, Mr. Simmons will serve fifth and sixth grade students at Perry Lecompton Middle School and will serve as the head basketball coach for PLHS.

Matt grew up in Great Bend, Kansas and graduated from Great Bend High school, home of the Panthers. Matt graduated from Fort Hays State University and went on to teach physical education at Lawrence Gardner High School located inside the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex and at Jefferson West Elementary. When asked why he wanted to become a teacher, Matt stated, “As most teachers feel, this is just what I was meant to do. It truly makes me happy and I know it is what I am supposed to be doing with my life.”

While in the classroom, Matt focuses on building relationships with students, all staff, and the community and believes seeing student growth is such a rewarding experience. When he’s not in the classroom, Mr. Simmons travels across the country coaching high level AAU basketball and spends time doing fun activities with my 5 year old daughter.

Matt, his wife, Janell and their daughter, Kendall live in the Topeka area. Matt looks forward to meeting all the staff and students and getting started! Matt shared, “The tradition of excellence that is in place at USD 343 was very appealing to me.” Welcome to the district, Simmons family! We look forward to your participation in that tradition of excellence!
