Kent Houk Joining the Business Department

Kent Houk has spent the past 10 years serving as the PLHS Baseball coach, as well working as a substitute teacher. He has spent the past two years as a paraprofessional for PLHS working with credit recovery students.  We are excited to have Mr. Houk joining the business department this year.  With his background in business, he will be able to give our students not just information, but practical experiences to help them understand the business world.

Mr. Houk graduated from Lawrence High School, and attend the University of Kansas, where he graduated with Bachelors in Business Administration.  He spent many years working in the travel industry and running a travel agency in Lawrence.  He decided he wanted to become a teacher after years of coaching.  He has always been a teacher on the field and he looks forward to expanding to the classroom.  "I have lived long enough to know that making a difference in a young person's life is what motivates me," he said.  When asked why he wanted to be a teacher in USD 343 he responded "I was introduced to USD 343 by my good friend Rhett Scrimsher, when he encouraged me to apply for the Varsity Baseball position 10 years ago.  I feel in love with the people and the opportunities the district provided students."  He is looking forward to continuing to do his best to make a difference in students' lives.

Mr. Houk has been married for 31 years to Lori Houk, they have two sons Coleman age 22, and Chase age 20.  He enjoys all sports and loves to go to as many of the PLHS sporting events that he can.  Baseball is his first love with golf being a close second.  He enjoys golf outings with his son, who now has to give him strokes!  He really enjoyed coaching both of his kids in all sports and now enjoys coaching with his son Chase.
