PLHS Hosts Region 1 Poetry Out Loud

Sara Haggard is the Region #1 Champion of Poetry Out Loud representing Perry-Lecompton High School. This is the second year Sara has been a participant in the Poetry Out Loud (POL) competition. Sara will move on to compete at the state level March 4, in Salina.  If she wins in Salina, she will then go on to compete at the national level in Washington DC in April.

Sara memorized two poems from the POL website and recited the poems for a panel of four judges. The judges were Dr. Susan Alexander from Perry and a Washburn University professor, Ms. Talitha Martin from Topeka and a Shawnee Heights English Teacher, Mr. Armin Landis from Oskaloosa a retired principal and teacher from the Perry-Lecompton District and Ms. Marcia Riley a retired teacher and author from Lawrence. Judges scored the presentations for accuracy, physical presence and posture, voice projection and articulation, appropriateness of dramatization, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding, and overall performance. Perry-Lecompton hosted the event on Saturday, January 21, 2017, in the PLHS library.

POL is a national program which encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, helping students connect with our literary heritage, deepening comprehension of challenging materials, and strengthening public speaking skills. More than 350,000 students take part in Poetry Out Loud every year and over $100,000 is rewarded to students each year.
