7th Grade Volleyball at PLMS

by: Madison Hess, student correspondent

School sports are always fun, especially volleyball. Volleyball is a game with a ball and two teams with six players on the court.  The object is to hit the ball over the net in three hits and hope the other team can’t hit it back. Volleyball may seem easy but there are a lot of rules; you can’t touch the net, can’t go over the middle line, have to hit the ball over in three or less hits, and plenty of other rules.

In order to get these rules down and know how to work with them we have to practice hard and fun drills. One of the hard drills we do is practicing on serve reception. Coach serves the ball over the net while six girls are in their reception positions. If the ball comes to you, you have to call it and hit it or you will have to run a set of stairs, two words; not fun! One of the other hard drills is working on our serving. We serve for about 5-10 minutes and if the ball is short we have to stop and do a set of 5 pushups, but if it goes out you have to do a set of 5 sit-ups.

Don’t worry; we have some pretty fun drills too. One of our fun drills is “Serve and Go.” The name pretty much tells you all. You stand on one end and serve it over, once you serve it you run. There’s a twist though, if you serve it over and it goes in, on one side you get chips and salsa, and on the other side frozen grapes. By far the best drill we’ve done.

A fun game that we do to work on our serving is everyone’s favorite, “Dead Fish.” There are two teams, you serve the ball over the net but if you don’t get it in you have to go on the other side and lie down like a dead fish. Once you’re there you cannot move until someone from your team hits you with their serve. Team with the most players at the end, or that lasts the longest wins.

As you can tell volleyball is hard and fun but that’s why we play!
