Perry-Lecompton Middle School is located in Perry, Kansas. The town of Perry is located just off Kansas Highway 24, approximately twelve miles northwest of Lawrence, Kansas and fifteen miles east of Topeka, Kansas. Students who attend PLMS live in a rural setting including the communities of Grantville, Lecompton, Perry and Williamstown.
The mission of Perry-Lecompton Middle School is to provide a positive and safe 21st century learning environment that empowers student achievement, promotes student responsibility and provides skills necessary to become productive citizens. As we look forward to the 2011-2012 school year, please know that our staff will be working hard to help each and every one of our students achieve this goal.
To accomplish this, our staff meets on a weekly basis for collaboration meetings to discuss student progress and plan educational activities. In addition, the staff conducts monthly departmental meetings to review “Best Practices” for our core classes and conducts monthly student intervention meetings to address specific individual student concerns.
At PLMS, we have an eight period day. A variety of non-core courses are offered including Art, Band, Vocal Music, Spanish, Industrial Technology, Business Technology, Physical Education, Keyboarding, and Computer Technology. In addition, our class schedule includes a directed studies period which not only provides our students with extra time to work on homework, it provides time to visit the library, complete project work in the computer lab, visit core teachers for additional help and/or clarification on specific content and provides time for the assigned directed studies teacher to monitor individual student progress.
Last spring, 2011, both the PLMS band and choir earned a #1 rating from judges at area music festivals. For the past four years, the students of Perry-Lecompton Middle School have earned the Building Standard of Excellence on both the Math and Reading state assessment. In addition, PLMS was one of 60 middle schools in the State of Kansas to receive recognition from the Kansas Association of Middle School Administrators. The awarding of Gold Level recognition, the highest of three recognition levels, was made to PLMS during the association’s annual conference held May 8 and 9 in Topeka. Suffice to say, our community, parents and staff are very proud of our students.
PLMS enters the 2011-2012 academic year with much excitement due to our second year of participating as a recipient of the Technology Rich Classroom Grant. This grant has provided Promethean boards, printers, “clicker” student response systems, dedicated laptops and Vernier science equipment for our 5th and 6th grade classrooms. The focus of this grant will be science but the equipment will be used in all 5th/6th subject areas. During this next school year, much of the same equipment will be added to the 7th grade core classrooms.
PLMS welcomes several new teachers to our staff.
- Mr. Doug Fisher will be our new 8th grade Math teacher. Mr. Fisher has two years of teaching experience and will serve as our head girls’ basketball coaches and assistant boys’ basketball coach.
- Mr. David Roberts will be our new 7th grade Science teacher. Mr. Roberts comes to us from Concordia Middle School. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Roberts will be an assistant football coach at PLMS and an assistant baseball coach at PLHS.
- Mrs. Deb Gallagher will serve as our new 5th and 6th grade resource teacher. Mrs. Gallagher comes to us from Rolla, Kansas where she has been a middle school resource teacher for the past fourteen years. Mrs. Gallagher will also serve as a Dance Team Instructor at PLHS.
- Lastly, Mrs. Sara Roesler will serve as our new Title 1 teacher. Mrs. Roesler spent the past year an elementary teachers at Perry-Lecompton Elementary School.
Our staff believes that the success of our students greatly depends on the support of our parents and community, therefore it is our goal to provide all parents and the community with up to date information about PLMS. We hope to accomplish this in the following ways.
- USD 343/PLMS Website – This is definitely the best way to keep up-to-date on current events and activities at PLMS. Please bookmark our website page and check back often. Parents will also find teacher email addresses, directions to away athletic events, breakfast and lunch menu, link to Power School and numerous other informational links.
- Power School Access – A secure webpage linked to our PLMS homepage. This site allows parents to check on their child’s assignments, overall grades, attendance and discipline issues. Parents should stop by our office to pick up your User Login and Password information. Please remember that you must provide picture identification to receive login/password information.
- Site Council – Our site council provides parents with the opportunity to work more closely with PLMS staff as we seek better ways to meet the needs of our students. All parents are welcome to our bi-monthly site council meetings.
- PTO – Parent Teacher Organization – The PTO also meets on a bi-monthly basis and is highly involved with providing valuable support on Parent-Teacher Conference, concession stand, fund-raisers, etc.
- Staff Email – Student progress is very important to the PLMS staff. The learning activities that occur during the school day receive first priority; therefore, a response to a parent email may not occur until after the school day or even the next morning. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, an email response should occur within one business day.
- School Reach – A program that allows us to notify every parents of important announcements within minutes of sending the message. Even if parents are unavailable to take the call, School Reach will leave a message which can be accessed at a more convenient time. Typically, we will use this system for school cancellations, athletic event cancellations/postponements or other important messages as determined by administration.
- Weekly Email – Are you curious about what is occurring at PLMS the upcoming week? If so, please be sure to sign up for the weekly email from the principal’s office.
In closing, please know that it is our honor and privilege to work with each and every student. We appreciate the support that PLMS receives from our community and parents! We truly understand that the success of our students is largely due to the guidance and encouragement provided at home. Have a great school year and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. GO KAWS!
Respectfully,
Josh Woodward
Principal
