THE HANDY FIVE

Help for all types of research

by Susie Whitaker

So, you have a research project due...

If you want to make sure you are ready to begin researching - ask yourself these HANDY FIVE questions!

What am I supposed to do?  -Check your assignment sheet - ask your teacher or classmates for more information if it is not clear.

How do I get the job done? (look at the online resources available before using a search engine) -What resources are required - do I have to use resources from databases, internet, or print?  Do I know where to find the resources?

Do I have everything I need to get started?  - What is my finished product supposed to look like?  Do I need additional materials, resources, or supplies.  Do I have a clear understanding of the assignment?

I think I am done, or am I? -  Have I met all the requirements of the assignment?  It is better to re-check the assignment sheet and ask a classmate to look it over for errors or missing components.

How well did I do?  - Is there something I could do differently next time? - Make sure this is best job you could have done.  Are you proud of your work or did you rush through it just to get it done?

Okay - you're ready to start!

Check out the "PLHS RESOURCES" on the USD 343 web site. Remember these HANDY FIVE questions should be asked for every research project.

Work smart - use the tools wisely!
