Mrs. Brown ~ 1st Grade News

Language Arts

During reading we will compare fact and fantasy.  After reading stories at home discuss with your child if the story is fact (true) or fantasy (make-believe).  Another fun way to practice is to tell your own story to your child or ask him to tell you a story.  Discuss if the story is true or fantasy just like you would after reading a book.  To practice writing, have your child write the story down.  We will be working on the consonants s/z, sh, ch/j and reviewing vowel sounds.

Sight Words: them, than, did, back, thing

Did You Know???

Here are a few tips the first grade is learning through Pathways to Reading, our new phonics program.

**When the letter e is directly following another vowel (a,e,i,o,u) the first vowel says its name.  Examples are Joe and Rylee.

The students call this rule “What’s your name e”.

**When the last sound in a word is /k/ and the vowel in front of it is a one-letter vowel then the sound /k/ is spelled with both c and k.  If the word has two vowels together the /k/ is spelled with only a k.  Examples are: lick, pack, luck      look, peek, weak

Students know this rule as “Defender c”.  The c defends the vowel when it is all alone.

Quick Quote

“The man who can read books and doesn’t is no better off than the man who cannot read them at all” -Mark Twain

**Boys may bring something to share for show-and-tell on Friday.

Math

First grade is continuing to work on addition.  We will talk about how changing the order of addends doesn’t affect the sum (1+2=3 and 2+1=3).  Another concept we will cover is finding more than one way to get the same sum (2+3=5 and 1+4=5).  Practice addition at home by creating your own problems or reviewing completed work pages together.

Student of the Week

Cali Coleman will be our new student of the week followed by Cooper Dick.  When it is your child’s turn two blank pages will be sent home with him on the Friday before his week begins.  They should be sent back on Monday.  These can be filled with pictures from home to be displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway.  An information sheet for your child will also be sent home.  Please help him complete it.
