New Tobacco-free School Grounds Policy Adopted

The USD #343 Board of Education adopted a new tobacco policy at its regular meeting on Monday, February 14, 2011.  The more restrictive policy places Perry-Lecompton Schools on an ever-growing list of Kansas school districts with tobacco-free school grounds policies including Bonner Springs, Gardner-Edgerton, Seaman, Lawrence and Baldwin City to name but a few of the nearly 80 Kansas school districts.

Key Aspects of the New Policy

  • Prohibits tobacco use of all kinds on all school grounds and school-owned property 24 hours a day by any student, staff or visitor.
  • Prohibits tobacco industry advertising, marketing and sponsorship on school property, at school functions and in school publications.
  • Uses signage, announcements and letters to advertise the policy.
  • Offers tobacco cessation program for staff in violation of the policy.
  • New policy will become effective July 1, 2011.

Policy Text Summary: Tobacco Use

Effective July 1, 2011, the use of all tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco) is prohibited in or on all school district property. The policy applies to everyone working on, working in, using or visiting school district properties. It applies to personal vehicles on school district property and district-owned vehicles.

This policy further prohibits tobacco industry advertising, marketing, and sponsorship on district property, at school functions, and in school publications. In addition, the exhibition of tobacco-oriented gear or paraphernalia by staff and students is prohibited. (The Grantville facility will be exempt from this policy until the current lease contract is renewed.)

The policy notes that USD #343 will use signage and when possible, provide written and verbal notices in district communications and announcements at events to provide awareness of this policy.  The district will make available current information regarding smoking and tobacco use cessation programs and provide information to employees who wish to participate in a tobacco cessation program.
