USD #343 Expanding 1:1 iPads to PLMS & LES

May 15, 2017

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, Lecompton Elementary and Perry-Lecompton Middle School will have a 1:1 iPad program.  This program is available due to the renewal of the 1:1 program at Perry-Lecompton High School.  The devices currently at the High School will have all data deleted, re-configured then assigned to each LES and PLMS student.  The district’s wireless network has already seen upgrades over the past two years and will easily handle the added devices for the 2017-18 school year.

At the current time, the plan is to have the devices available for each LES/PLMS student during the school day.  The iPads will not travel home with students.  This procedure will be reviewed as students and teachers become more familiar with their newly assigned devices.

Classroom instruction, research, completing assignments, state assessments, emailing teachers, creating individual and group projects are just a few examples of how the iPads will be used by students.  Students will be exposed daily to technology that will help them function in today’s society.

Game applications will not be allowed on the iPads.  All iPads are managed by the school district with a program that will add and remove needed/required applications to the student’s device.   During use at school, the devices will be connected to the district’s secure network that will protect students from harmful or inappropriate websites.

All iPads will be in a protective Otterbox case and charged on a nightly basis in the student’s classroom.  The school district has found the Otterbox case to be very dependable over the past four years.  Breakage has been extremely rare with the exception of severe student neglect or vandalism.

LES and PLMS students should transition easily to using iPads at school.  USD #343 has used iPads at LES and PLMS for the past four years in mobile carts.  With the implementation of the 1:1 initiative, students and teachers will no longer have the need to sign up for classroom usage!

PLHS students will continue the 1:1 program with the deployment of the latest model of iPad this August.  One change however, will be that all students must use the school issued iPad.  (Personal iPads will not be allowed to connect to the school’s network).   Additionally, this process will assure students are on task in the classroom, as gaming applications will not be allowed on the device.  This also will assure that iPads will have adequate storage space for the many class projects used by PLHS teachers.   Because of this, the $50 take home technology fee will be eliminated.  However, $25 will be added to the current enrollment fee to help offset the cost of technology.   Overall, PLHS parents will save $25 next year!

We have also made changes to our Freshmen/New student iPad.  Because email accounts are pre-configured on the device and the district adds applications to the device as needed, we will no longer require students and parents to complete the tasks of creating new iTunes and email accounts on the orientation night.   Our new orientation will require students and parents to view an on-line video and then submit a form to the PLHS office before the iPad is allowed to leave the building.  (LES/PLMS students and parents will not complete this task, as their iPads will not leave the school.)

We are excited to expand technology into the hands of more Perry-Lecompton students and are looking forward to seeing the innovative ways they will used in the classroom.
