PLHS Winter Sports

The Kaws have started their winter sports seasons and are looking forward to representing PLHS on the hardwood and wrestling mat.

The wrestling team started off their season competing in a double dual with Silver Lake and Atchison County and have been to two tournaments.  At the Melvin Douglass Tournament held at Topeka Highland Park, the Kaws put five wrestlers into the finals with four winning titles.  Braden Woodson (106 lbs), Wyatt Pringle (120lbs), Torin Van Nest (152 lbs) and Collin Rossillon (220) were individual champions and Grant Roush (126 lbs) took second.  Hunter Barnes (113 lbs) and Joshua Renneberg (138 lbs) fought for fourth place finishes and the team finished as runner-up.

The wrestling schedule will heat up after the Christmas break with a full January of tournaments and various duals.  Senior night will be on January 30th and the team will be looking to peak as they enter February and have the Big Seven Meet (Feb 11), Regionals (Feb 17-18) and State (Feb 24-25).

Basketball will play six games before the semester break.  The boys got two big wins right out of the gate against traditional powers Holton and Sabetha, while the girls have grabbed an early victory against Royal Valley.  First year head coach for the girls, Don Smith, reports practices are going well and sees improvement from his team as they continue to learn the new system.  Boys coach, Jared Swafford, likes how his practices have been competitive and intense.  Both teams will run the gauntlet of the Big Seven and have mid-season tournaments in January.

Highlights of the upcoming basketball schedule include Winter Royalty (Jan 10), Senior Night (Feb 17), Sub-State (Feb 27 - Mar 4) and State (Mar 8 - 11).

Scholars Bowl has been competing since October and their season will continue into February.  The team did earn a championship at the Jeferson County North Invitational and will look to continue to do well as we host our tournament on January 11th.  Regional Scholars Bowl will be held February 2nd with hopes of qualify for the State meet on February 11th.

We hope to see you out supporting our teams.

Go Kaws!
