The PLHS Lady Kaws basketball team is off to its best start since the 1997-1998 season.
The Kaws started off their season 2-2, but since then have rattled off 5 straight victories leading to their current 7-2 record. Overall, the Kaws are led by a host of players. They are led in scoring by Katie Volle (11.5 ppg), Abbey Bays (9 ppg), Jessica Christman (8.8 ppg), and Natasha Carver (6.1 ppg).
Leading rebounders for the Kaws include Jessica Christman (7.3 rpg) and Katie Volle (5.8 rpg).
The Lady Kaws force an average of nearly 18 turnovers per game while only giving up an average of 34 ppg, largely in part to the backcourt play of 5 veteran guards: Katie Hirsch, Emma Gantz, Taylor Akagi, Natasha Carver, and Abbey Bays.
The frontcourt consists of a constant 3-player rotation in Katherine Frye, Christman, and Volle, all of which are seniors who work extremely well together defensively. These ladies have supplied some excitement to a program that hasn’t seen a lot of recent success and look to continue to improve throughout the season as well as pass on a work ethic that will withstand the test of time.
This group is confident and willing to do what it takes to get better and with continued work, could be a team that surprises many along the way.
Quote (Mayer): “When we came into the season, I expected there to be improvement from this bunch due to the summer participation and the work they put in collectively, I just didn’t know exactly how much. This group was essentially JV players last year that had to play up. The experience they got last year by taking their lumps and not accepting that to happen again has really propelled them.”
