H1N1 Flu Vaccinations Coming to USD #343 Schools

USD #343 school officials have been in close contact with the Jefferson County Health Department in preparing for and monitoring the spread of H1N1 flu in our schools. Through the third week of October our daily absence rate, for all illnesses,  has been running from approximately 5% to a high of nearly 12%. Parents have been very cooperative in helping control the spread of sickness by keeping children at home fever free for at least 24 hours before their return to school.

The Jefferson County Health Department has been working with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to schedule dates for school based clinics, in each of our schools, as soon as possible. It appears there is a much slower distribution of vaccine from the CDC than earlier announced. This slow release of vaccine has pushed the time of school based clinics back to December, at the earliest.

However, vaccination consent forms will be sent home with our students in the coming days, in order for the health department to quantify the number of doses needed. Jefferson County Health Department does plan to provide vaccinations for students as soon as sufficient doses of vaccine are available from the CDC.

Parents will be notified as soon as more definitive information from the Jefferson County Health Department is available. We encourage parents to contact their medical provider or heath department regarding specific H1N1 flu questions they may have.
