Ms. Tara Goerzen to Take Over Alternative Program

by J.B. Elliott

One of the changes at PLHS for the 2009-2010 school will include an Alternative Education Program located within the building.  Previously, PLHS had used John Dewey Learning Academy as a way for students to complete their high school education in an alternative manner.  With the continued use of Virtual Prescriptive Learning (VPL), it is now possible for PLHS to offer its version of an alternative program.  Students enrolled in the alternative program will take core classes (Math, English, Science and Social Studies) through the VPL program and continue to take elective courses (Art, P.E., Industrial Tech, etc) in the regular educational setting.

PLHS has selected Ms. Tara Goerzen to oversee the VPL instruction for students.  She will be working with VPL students throughout the day as a para who will assist in tracking assignments, tutoring various lessons, and seeing that the required technology is working properly.

Ms. Goerzen earned her Bachelor degree in Communications from Bethel College in May of 2008.  During her time in college, Ms. Goerzen played basketball for Bethel college as the starting point guard where she was the Co-Captain of the team.  She is currently working on a degree in Elementary Education from Washburn University.

Ms. Georzen will be married later this summer to new PLHS Chemistry teacher Mr. Thomas Cooprider.  They plan to reside in Topeka for the time being.

We are looking forward to many years of educational production from Ms. Georzen!
