Summer Learning Plans...

...Version 2.0

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’…”

Summer is the time for students and families to relax and reconnect through long, lazy days together!  After a school year of hard work, it is important to take a break and focus on independent activities.

This year, we have decided to change the way we offer opportunities to extend instruction by using a web based program called Study Island.  Many of our seventh and eighth graders are already using Study Island at home and at school.  Now, all students in grades three through eight will have the chance to maintain or improve their skills in Math and Reading during the summer by logging on to the site and completing assigned lessons.  We will work with the youngsters during the last two weeks in May to ensure that they have set goals, know how to access their lessons, and have a password which will be shared with parents.

Two teachers will make regular contact by phone or email, to keep the students motivated and on track.  Parents will be asked to supervise at first, until the “Islanders” are comfortable with the system.  The beauty of Study Island is that it can be reached from any computer with either broadband or dialup access to the internet, at any time that is convenient for the student.  Vacations and camps will not interfere with learning this summer!

Once the students are back in the buildings in August, they will receive awards and recognition for having met their goals.  We are excited about the possibilities for every third through eighth grader to stay current with Kansas standards in Reading and Math, and start next year ready to move to even higher levels of achievement.
