Destiny:

21st Century Libraries

By Susie Whitaker

This month our district libraries will truly become instructional media centers!  We are happy to announce the addition of a new online system to replace the antiquated one that we have been using.  This program will bring our library catalogs to a whole new level to provide students, staff, and patrons the opportunity to browse all of our library materials at once.

Switching to the Destiny online catalog offers our patrons immediate access to library resources – simply at the click of a mouse!!!  It provides information on reading levels, Accelerated Reader titles, availability and location of materials, and many other features.  The new catalog will allow patrons (students, families, and teachers) to customize reading lists and create book reviews – Destiny is an interactive literacy tool.  We will be providing more detailed information about accessing the Destiny system during the Summer and in August.

A particularly important feature for staff is the ability to search the collection for materials that focus on specific state and national curricular standards.  Destiny will allow teachers and librarians to customize book and resource lists for students and for future reference.

These new features will open brand new doors not only for our teachers, but also for our students. We anticipate greater levels of information literacy as well, as everyone takes a more personal approach to using the media centers’ collections.

This is an exciting new adventure for our school community.  We look forward to hearing your feedback!

What do you like about the new system?
