PES Learning Garden

by Connie Thornton

May 01, 2008

In June of 2005 Perry Elementary School was awarded the OWLS Grant (Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site) of $2,000 from the Kansas State Dept. of Wildlife and Parks, thus began the life of the PES Children’s Learning Garden.  The goal of this project was to develop features in the outdoor classroom that will attract wildlife and its habitats.  This in turn will assist in developing an understanding of the environment and the necessity to protect and or restore habitats in order to increase wildlife diversity and numbers.  Over the last 3 years the garden has grown in many ways and special additions have been added due the generosity of our community.  In November of this year PES held an outside learning event in the garden.  Students rotated through various stations which included science, math, literature and writing.

During Earth week of this year all PES students were involved in ‘sprucing’ up the garden for spring!  Our garden is a wonderful addition and we are all anticipating the new growth that will develop over the years.  Thank you for your support with this project.
