Softball Team Off to Fantastic Start

Kaws sweep Bonner to improve to 7-1

by Jeff Dickson

April 22, 2008

High expectations abound for the 2007-2008 Lady Kaw Softball team. With a starting roster that has been together at the high school level for the last 3 years , everyone in the Kaw Valley League knew this squad could be the very best ever in PLHS history. Whether they live up to those lofty goals remains to be seen, but given the incredible start the Lady Kaws are off to, it looks like that will be no problem for this talented group of softball players.

The Lady Kaws got their season off with a bang crushing Pleasant Ridge 12-2 and 6-1 and followed up those wins with a split series with Basehor-Linwood, with the Lady Kaws winning game one 4-2 before dropping game 2 10-5.

This edition of softball Kaws didn't hang their heads after the loss to Basehor and went right back to work beating longtime rival 5A Lansing for the first time in several years, sweeping the Lady Lions 1-0 behind a masterful pitching performance by junior Courtney Kasson and finishing the night defeating Lansing 4-1.

Now the Lady Kaws are in a critical 2 week period of their season where because of weather postponements, PLHS will be playing a whopping 12 games in the next 14 days.

The first match up of this trek was last night vs the 5A Bonner Springs Lady Braves.

In the first game, The Kaws won 5- 0 behind the pitching of Courtney Kasson who only allowed 2 hits and recorded 11 strikeouts. Hitting highlights included Kasson going 3 for 3 including a triple, double and single. Sandy Robbins and Daffodil Reumund went 1 for 2 and going 1 for 3 were LeeAnne Pringle and Erin Powell.

In the nightcap, The Kaws won 8 - 4, Olivia Breitenbach pitched her first win of her PLHS career, allowing only 2 hits and recorded 3 strikeouts. Hitting hightlights included: Courtney Kasson going 1 for 1 and adding another triple for the nite; Emily Huerter going 2 for 4; LeeAnne Pringle and Daffodil Reumund both 1 for 2, Shelby Erickson 1 for 3, also with a triple; and Chelsea Williams hitting 1 for 4.

The sweep of the Lady Braves pushes the Lady Kaws record to 7-1 and excitement is continuing to grow for this amazing group of girls.

"We've done a lot of good things and we are so excited for the rest of the season, " said Junior Emily Huerter.

Many of Lady Kaw fans agree! Make sure you get out in the next few weeks and watch this group chase their first ever Kaw Valley League Championship!
