Canoe Trip Fun for Everyone
by Emma Gantz
On Saturday April 5th, several students of PLHS went on a canoe trip from Lecompton Rising Sun River access to Lawrence.
Mr. Haggard is the sponsor of the trip. Canoes and kayaks were provided with a charge from the Up a Creek Canoe and Kayak Service. It cost $12 per person for canoes and $10 for the first six kayaks.
We started at 10 in the morning and finished at 3 that afternoon. We stopped twice along the way for breaks to eat and stretch. People found treasures when we stopped on the sand bars. There were interesting rocks, sticks, and bones that we viewed as "treasures". The trip went smoothly and everyone had a good time. The weather was nice but there were some tough spots that we had to paddle.
It was interesting to see where the creeks joined into the river and trying to guess where you were at on the river. The KPL power plant was interesting to see close up because it sits on the edge of the river. It was loud and I can not imagine working there with all that noise. Another common noise were the geese that were nesting on the river. At almost every log jam we saw the geese and we heard them even sooner.
No one tipped their boats over or got too wet. The only people that did get wet didn’t wear their waterproof shoes, because when we stopped on the sandbars we had to walk through shallow water. The water was really cold , so it is a good thing that no one fell in or got too wet. The trip was a success and next year it would be a good experience for the people who were not able to attend this year’s trip..
