Kaw Wrestling kicked off the Kaw Preview at 5:30 on Monday the 26th of November. The scrimmage lasted about an hour, as our athletics went head to head for three, two minute periods.
The first meet of the season is Thursday the 29th with meets that follow on Friday and Saturday. On the 29th the Kaws will host their first quad of the season. On the 30th the Junior Varsity will wrestle away at the Santa Fe Trail Invitational.
“Last night I thought everyone did pretty well, there were lots of
good matches”, said John Mehl, sophomore. “I’m excited for
Thursday, it’s always fun to see how you compare to other teams,”
said Trent Robb, freshman. Both Mehl and Robb have high
expectations for the season.
“I expect as a team, a high record and to qualify many wrestlers
for state”, said Robb.
Goals are an important factor to set at the beginning of the
season.
“I hope we do well in tournaments”, explains Mehl. Both Robb and
Mehl ( who qualified for state last season as a freshman) are
looking forward to certain things this season.
“Showing that as a freshman, that I can win against the best even
if they are older than me”, said Robb.
“Traveling is always fun, because we get out of class early”,
laughed Mehl.
The Lady Kaws warmed up the crowd at 6:30 to show off the growing
and improving basketball program. Three, eight minute quarters of
hard fought basketball showed the spectators that turned out for
the event how hard the Lady Kaws have been working.
“They exceeded my expectations, played with more confidence than
last year and made good decisions. I was very pleased with
aggressiveness on the floor and the way they hustled”, said Coach
Mark Armstrong. Three 8 minute quarters of hard fought basketball
showed the spectators that turned out for the event how hard the
Lady Kaws have been working.
Coach Armstrong commented on the outlook for the beginning of the
season.
“It looks promising; some kids have already stepped up offensively
as we are already outscoring last year. There are different ways to
measure success, improving day to day and growing as a team is a
success to us.”
Abby Bays feels the goals for this season is the team getting
better as a whole which will lead the Lady Kaws to success.
“Being a team on and off the court is very important”, commented
Bays.
Both Coaches and Players know that the team has things to improve
on but are excited to see what the new season brings.
The boys hit the floor at 7:30 some adorned in the “old-school” uniforms and wigs to top it off. Others wore traditional Perry-Lecompton blue and white uniforms. But no matter what jersey the Kaws wore, they still performed showing off quick passes, great screens and even a little dunking.
“It was a fun night for the team and a chance to show off a little bit for the kids. Now we can refocus and get prepared for our season”, said Coach Jeff Dickson.
Both Kaw basketball teams open the season at home Friday, November 30 vs. Bishop Ward.
